India Won the Toss, Elected to Bowl?

Twenty 20 cricket since its inception in 2004 has redefined the game completely, capturing every cricket lover's attention. The number of T20 matches being played has witnessed an increase over the years. A whole new level of Batting innovations, Bowling variations and Fielding spectacles has become a part of cricket.

This re-conceptualization of the game has also seen teams now winning the toss and opting to bowl first. This latest trend has observed more and more teams winning matches batting second, so is the case with team India.

The Indian team has won  45 out of the total 65 matches which they have played fielding first, losing only 18 with 2 No results. This is the highest number of wins by any team so far, followed by Australia and Pakistan.

Run machine Virat Kohli has a history of chasing down huge targets, leading from the front in these run chases. However, which other players prefer batting second? Does India's bowling attack contribute to their chances of winning while chasing?

This made me analyse the average runs scored by Batsman in the 1st innings and in 2nd innings along with Bowlers average of conceding runs in both the innings.

Analysis:
  • It is quite evident that most Indian batsman score better in their 2nd innings.
  • Dinesh Karthik has the second best average after King Kohli, displaying the kind of  form he is in T20 internationals.
  • Manish Pandey and KL Rahul have almost the same average when it comes to batting first or second, which very well should cement their spot in the team.
  • Jasprit Bumrah with almost same average in both the innings sums up his consistent performance for India.

Both the Batting and Bowling department working in tandem has led team India become almost invincible while chasing. However, we also realize why Indian team  has struggled whenever put to bat first by the opposition.

Teams such as Pakistan (Currently number 1 ranked T20 side) have more wins batting first then chasing targets. Toss becomes a crutial factor if India depends heavily on chasing, which is a reason to worry considering Virat Kohli's fortune in winning tosses.

What should be the ideal team composition to have a more balanced lineup? Do you think Dinesh Karthik should make a comeback as a finisher in the Indian squad? If so, who should he replace? Would like to know your views on the same!!

Indian Premier League - Does a teams victory depend on the distance they travel??

Do we ever wonder how many miles are clocked by IPL teams during a single season? Would playing one match in Chennai then travelling 1,994 kms to play their next in Mohali affect their performance?

Many a times we read about IPL teams blaming their poor performance on fatigue of the players. It is easy for us, the viewers to just sit back and enjoy the matches on our TV screens or in stadiums. What we do not realize is the effort a team puts in, travelling from city to city just to put up a great show for us.

Could fatigue or Jet Lag be a factor for dip in performance of teams? Can travelling more, affect the winning chances of a team?

This curiosity made me analyse IPL season 2016 to 2019 of 6 teams (excluding Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, as they faced two years ban for 2016-17 season) for the total distance they traveled along with their Home and Away wins count.

Visualization through Tableau

KEY OBSERVATIONS:
  • Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) traveled a total distance of 43,123 kms which is the lowest distance traveled by any team and they have the highest number of Home wins (20) under their belt.
  • Mumbai Indians (MI) are the 2nd least traveled team with a total distance of 43,563 kms and have bagged the most number of Away wins (16)
  • Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) traveled 57,093 kms, making them the 2nd most traveled team during the 4 seasons. KXIP having traveled more, have the least number of Away wins (8).
  • Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have the least number of Home wins (12) are the 3rd most traveled team (53,441 kms) during all the 4 seasons.
  • Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) stood out as an exemption in this Analysis as they have equal number of Home and Away wins (15 each) inspite of being the most traveled team in all 4 seasons combined. Their score of distance traveled was also high  because they are the only team from east India and had to travel long distances for their away matches.
The Stats say it all !! Clearly, team combinations and Players performances are not the only parameters which contributes towards a teams victory. Also, these staggering numbers are minus the distance teams travel to reach the airports and stadiums at various locations.

We are here talking about 56 group stage matches spread over 44 days, so a proper Schedule Analysis is the need of the hour for IPL francises!

In the 2019 IPL season, the travel schedule eased a bit as there were exactly 8 Home venues, each team having one Home ground. This was a relief for teams, as in earlier seasons few teams had multiple home grounds such as Dharamshala, Indore, Ranchi, Ahmedabad, Cuttack and Visakhapatnam.

Can this "One Team One Home Ground" be a possible solution? Should the IPL governing body come up with a more balanced schedule for teams ? Would like to know your perspective on the same!
